Today, August 20: AFSCME’s 47th International Convention is active at McCormick Place and runs through Friday, August 21. The organizer’s convention call places Thursday activity across McCormick Place, including Hall B and committee rooms. Use the AFSCME agenda/app for the final session room and time.

Lot A — most flexible
2301 S Prairie Ave. Six-level garage, 8 ft clearance, EV charging, connected walkways, and the only main lot with regular overnight car parking.
Lot B — surface / larger vehicles
3050 S Moe Dr. Outdoor surface lot beside truck marshaling. Review it for bus/RV and overflow needs.
Lot C — Lakeside
1801 Fort Dearborn Dr. Underground, adjacent to Lakeside. The 6 ft 4 in clearance is the first thing a tall-vehicle driver should check.

2026 fare confusion resolved: CTA proposed a fare increase during 2026 budget planning, but the Transit Board’s approved budget held fares flat. Current Chicago visitor guidance still lists $2.50 rail and $2.25 bus. If you saw $2.75 rail in a proposed-budget PDF, that proposal did not take effect.
Payment: Ventra is the standard CTA system and contactless cards/mobile wallets are practical for visitors. Metra pricing is origin-dependent; use the current Metra calculator rather than publishing one universal fare.
Hotels: connected beats “0.3 miles away” for many convention trips
Hotel SERP pages often rank properties only by straight-line distance or nightly rate. For a large campus, the better decision is skybridge access + your building + first/last session + event housing rules.

Exhibitor load-in detail: the West technical spec lists 13 dock berths for Hall F1, 20 for Hall F2 and 6 for Skyline Ballroom. Those figures explain the building’s capacity; they do not replace your show’s assigned dock window or general service contractor instructions.

Room-count discrepancy: current official/destination pages are not perfectly consistent—some show 170 meeting rooms, while some current planner summaries show 173. Rather than pretending one marketing count is universally exact, use the current floor plans and the specific building’s room schedule for planning.
For an attendee, room codes and building levels matter more than total square footage. For a planner, use technical floor-plan PDFs for exact dimensions, ceiling heights, floor loads, docks and room-set capacities rather than relying on a homepage total.

Small inside-the-building details that save real time
Three Mamava suites
Lakeside Level 2 by the Gift Shop; North/South Level 2.5 across from Starbucks; West Level 1 near the Indiana Avenue Main Information Desk. The Mamava app can unlock the suites.
Information desks
Venue amenities identify South Level 1, West Levels 1 and 3, and Lakeside Level 3. These are better escalation points than walking randomly between buildings.
ATMs and bike racks
ATMs are listed in multiple buildings. Bike racks are listed by South Gate 3, West Gate 40 and Lakeside Level 2. Exact operating access can be event-dependent.
Food/service hours vary: restaurants, food courts, convenience areas and satellite services may operate based on event activity. Do not turn a venue amenity into a guaranteed daily opening-hours claim.
Wi-Fi reality: attendee browsing and exhibitor internet are different
The venue’s public amenities language and its Technology Services guide sound different until you separate public/meeting Wi-Fi from active exhibit-floor booth connectivity.
Basic complimentary access
McCormick Place describes complimentary/basic Wi-Fi in public spaces and meeting areas. It is intended for light use and can be affected by crowd volume.

The Technology Services ordering guide says complimentary Wi-Fi is not generally available on active exhibit floors except designated Food Pod areas in Halls A/F and one show-manager-selected hotspot per exhibit hall.

Who counts as an “Exhibitor Employee” in this PDF? It defines the person as a full-time employee for at least six months before the show’s opening. W-2, payroll or other proof may be requested and must be furnished within 24 hours of notification. Questions: 312-791-7299.
Freight, docks and truck marshaling: do not ship early freight to the venue
Freight is one of the highest-cost mistakes an exhibitor can make. Current venue guidance says to coordinate move-in/out with the show’s General Service Contractor (GSC).
The contractor creates the production and dock-door usage plan.
Freight arriving at McCormick Place or its truck-marshaling facility before the licensed move-in date will not be accepted.
Ask the GSC about its advance warehouse rather than sending it directly to McCormick Place.
Truck Marshaling is by Lot B at 3050 Moe Dr; it has 24-hour staff, a certified scale, convenience/vending and security cameras, with applicable fees.
Planner deadline: current freight guidance says the Dock/Elevator Schedule form should be completed with the GSC and returned 15 days before the event.

McCormick Place is large enough that space selection is an attendee-flow problem as much as a square-footage problem.
Public ownership and two separate 2026 sustainability credentials
Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority
MPEA says it is a municipal corporation created by the Illinois General Assembly and that it owns McCormick Place. That makes MPEA the public owner; the convention center itself should not be mislabeled as a government office.
