Washington DC Convention Center Address & Entrances

The venue’s current official address is:

Walter E. Washington Convention Center 801 Allen Y. Lew Place NW
Washington, DC 20001
United States

Why do some websites show 801 Mt. Vernon Place NW?

Mount Vernon Place NW was renamed Allen Y. Lew Place NW in 2023. Older maps, event programs and even some venue information pages still use the former street name. Both names can refer to the same convention center; the current business address uses Allen Y. Lew Place.

Which entrance should you use?

Entrance or areaHow visitors should use it
Allen Y. Lew Place / main frontageUseful general arrival reference. Check your event instructions for public admission.
L Street NWUsed for certain conferences, meetings and registration arrangements.
Metro entrance near 7th & M Streets NWConvenient for visitors using the Green or Yellow Metro line.
Exhibit halls or meeting-room entrancesYour organizer may assign a particular hall, lobby or level.
Important: A venue-wide address is not the same as your event check-in point. Find the entrance, hall letter and room number in your registration confirmation before leaving home.

Getting to the Convention Center by Metro, Train or Airport

For many visitors, Metrorail is the most convenient option because the building sits beside the Mt Vernon Square/7th Street–Convention Center station.

Starting pointPractical route
Green or Yellow LineExit at Mt Vernon Sq / 7th St–Convention Center and follow venue signage.
Red LineExit at Gallery Place–Chinatown; Events DC describes the walk as approximately five minutes. You can also transfer to Green/Yellow.
Union StationTake the Red Line toward Gallery Place–Chinatown, then walk or transfer.
Reagan National Airport (DCA)Take the Yellow Line toward central DC and exit at Mt Vernon Square, subject to current service.
Dulles International Airport (IAD)Take the Silver Line toward downtown; transfer to Green/Yellow at L’Enfant Plaza for Mt Vernon Square.
Baltimore/Washington Airport (BWI)Use the airport shuttle to BWI Rail Station, then MARC or Amtrak to Union Station, followed by Metro or taxi.

Micro-steps: Arrive by Metrorail

  1. Open WMATA Trip Planner. Enter your starting station and choose Mt Vernon Sq 7th St–Convention Center as your destination.
  2. Select your route. Green/Yellow typically provides direct venue access. Other lines may need a transfer.
  3. Check disruptions. Confirm current trains, elevator status, last-train times and fares before travel.
  4. Exit near 7th and M Streets NW. Follow signs toward the convention center.
  5. Find event registration. Your organizer’s designated entrance may be elsewhere in the building.
Accessible transit: The Mt Vernon Square station has elevator entrances near 7th and M Streets. Check WMATA’s real-time elevator status if step-free access is essential.

Washington DC Convention Center Parking: What Drivers Need to Know

There is no public onsite parking inside the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. Events DC reports more than 3,000 public parking spaces in surrounding garages and surface lots within roughly three blocks.

These are independently operated facilities. Rates vary by garage, arrival time, event, reservation platform and duration. There is no single official convention center parking fee.

Option 1Nearby public garages

Best for visitors driving to a full-day event. Compare distance, maximum daily cost and closing hours.

Option 2Metered street parking

Limited and subject to restrictions. Not ideal for long convention sessions.

Option 3Accessible street spaces

Designated metered spaces are listed near 7th and 9th Streets NW. Observe posted limits and permit rules.

Option 4Metro or rideshare

Often simpler for visitors who do not need to transport materials.

How to Find and Reserve Parking

  1. Search for parking near 801 Allen Y. Lew Place NW, Washington DC 20001.
  2. Check walking distance to your actual event entrance, not simply the center of the venue.
  3. Compare the displayed event rate, tax, service fees and maximum stay.
  4. Confirm garage height clearance, operating hours, cancellation policy and whether re-entry is allowed.
  5. Save the garage’s precise street entrance and any reservation QR code before traveling.
Avoid a common mistake: Nearby hotel valet parking and public convention-area garage parking are different products. Do not assume a hotel offers general-public parking or that event attendees receive hotel parking privileges.

For additional parking decisions, local navigation details and venue-specific restrictions, read our Walter E. Washington Convention Center parking and Metro guide.

Washington DC Convention Center Events, Tickets & Opening Hours

The convention center does not operate like a museum with one universal public ticket and admission schedule. Access depends on the event: some shows sell public tickets, others require professional registration, and private conferences may be closed to nondelegates.

Observe posted signage, permit requirements, street restrictions and time limits. The venue lists a two-hour posted limit during daytime enforcement hours for the designated street spaces.

For visitors with mobility needs: Ask the event organizer about accessible seating, mobility equipment and the correct event entrance in advance. Check WMATA elevator availability separately when using Metro.

Food, Wi-Fi, Lost & Found and Guest Services

Food and Refreshments

Food service inside the convention center is provided through Events DC’s partnership with Aramark and its DC Eats program. Depending on the event, visitors may find concessions, coffee, quick meals and portable food counters.

Nearby downtown restaurants provide additional choices before or after an event. However, outside-food rules may be set by individual event organizers, so check the active show policy.

Wi-Fi and Connectivity

Events DC’s public materials describe complimentary wireless access in some contexts, while other guest-services information distinguishes free hotspot areas from chargeable service. Visitors should not assume that free connectivity is adequate for video calls, livestreams or exhibitor business operations.

For essential internet use, follow the organizer’s technology instructions and confirm any dedicated connection or paid service requirements.

Lost Property

  1. Check the event organizer’s Show Management office or information desk first.
  2. Describe the missing item, event, date and last known location.
  3. For property not recovered during the event, contact Events DC Public Safety at 202-249-4111.
  4. Events DC says items transferred to Public Safety may be held for up to 90 days.

Other Onsite Services

  • Information desk in the Grand Lobby and additional “Ask Me” locations.
  • ATMs in common areas.
  • Business center services including copying and limited shipping support.
  • Digital wayfinding signs and convention information.

Hotel-name confusion: Some older search results show a Motel 6 “Washington DC Convention Center” property in the Union Market area, not at the convention center itself. That former property has been reported as undergoing redevelopment. Our Motel 6 Washington DC Convention Center property-status guide explains the distinction before you attempt to book.
