Commonwealth Convention Center Is Now KICC: Plan the Right Louisville Visit
If you searched for Commonwealth Convention Center Louisville, the current venue is the Kentucky International Convention Center (KICC) at 221 S. 4th St in downtown Louisville. The old name still appears in search results, but there is not a separate modern Commonwealth convention venue to find.
For event day, confirm your exact hall or room first, then choose Cowger or Commonwealth Garage, the correct street entrance, and the right Upper/Main/Lower concourse route.
KICC quick facts before you leave home
The useful facts are the ones that change your route, cost or timing—not a long history lesson.
KICC is the current official venue name.
Legacy name still used in older references and searches.
Louisville, KY 40202.
General KICC contact.
Confirm organizer access rules before travel.
Time-based KICC rates through 24 hours.
First-come/first-served; no in-and-out privileges in the planning guide.
Which doors open depends on event location and schedule.
KICC lists taxi and rideshare from Louisville airport.
Plus exhibit halls, ballroom and Conference Theater.
Bring card/mobile payment for venue purchases.
Plus 6 public elevators and 12 public escalators.
Fastest event-day sequence: event page → full room/hall code → concourse → entrance → garage. Routing only to “221 S. 4th St” leaves the most important decisions until you are already downtown.
What are you actually trying to do at KICC?
Find an event and get inside
Confirm the organizer, full room code, door time, ticket/badge instructions and event-specific policies before choosing parking.
Choose a garage before GPS
Cowger and Commonwealth serve different street approaches. Downtown one-way streets make a missed turn more annoying than it looks on the map.
Check pedway timing
Marriott and Hyatt pedways can be useful, but KICC opens them at event discretion rather than guaranteeing all-day access.
Use docks, not attendee doors
Freight, dollies and large carts do not belong through lobby doors. Your show manual controls move-in and shipping.
Plan the shortest usable route
Match accessible parking and elevators to the concourse your event uses; wheelchair/scooter rentals are not always provided by event contractors.
Use the PDF as an operations document
Floor-plan review, staffing, insurance, catering, dock control and exhibitor-service deadlines can generate fees when handled late.
Commonwealth Convention Center vs Kentucky International Convention Center
Commonwealth Convention Center is the former name of the downtown Louisville facility now called Kentucky International Convention Center. Current Kentucky government, Louisville government and KICC pages all use the KICC name and the 221 S. 4th St address.
Do not confuse it with Kentucky Exposition Center. KICC is downtown. Kentucky Exposition Center is a separate, much larger campus at 937 Phillips Lane near Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport.
Who operates KICC?
Kentucky government says the Kentucky State Fair Board operates KICC and Kentucky Exposition Center, while Kentucky Venues is the Board’s operating brand. This page explains that relationship visibly but does not invent a schema owner relationship because the current sources are explicit about operation/management rather than a separate ownership declaration for this specific building.
What is happening at KICC next?
Reviewed August 17, 2026: the National Homeland Security Conference ended August 13. The next confirmed KICC calendar listing found is the American Legion 2026 National Convention, August 25–September 3. The International Elastomer Conference follows September 24–October 2.
American Legion 2026 National Convention
Use the event organizer for registration, public/private access, badges, hotel blocks, security rules and exact room assignments.
International Elastomer Conference
Trade-show visitors and exhibitors should confirm show-floor access, credentials, move-in and booth-service details with the organizer.
KICC date ≠ complete attendee policy
The venue calendar confirms a listing; it does not replace the organizer’s ticket, badge, bag, re-entry, child or exhibitor rules.
KICC event doors do not follow one universal visitor schedule
Search listings can show ordinary business hours, but the official planning guide says entrance doors are locked outside show hours and scheduled to open during show hours unless arrangements are made in advance. KICC’s live maps page also says specific doors and pedways open based on the event’s location.
| Question | Best source | Why |
|---|---|---|
| When can I enter my event? | Event organizer + KICC door schedule | Event doors are scheduled around show hours, not generic map business hours. |
| When can work crews enter? | Show manual / KICC move-in instructions | Live maps page directs show staff/facility employees to a dedicated check-in route during move-in/out. |
| Will the hotel pedway be open? | Event-specific KICC schedule | Marriott and Hyatt pedways are opened at event discretion. |
| What if I visit on a non-show day? | Administrative entrance at 3rd & Market | KICC instructs non-show-day visitors to use the call box there. |
KICC parking rates, garage choice and no-in/out rule
KICC currently publishes time-based parking at its two downtown garages. The Event Planning Guide adds two useful details often omitted from search snippets: garage parking is first-come, first-served and does not include in-and-out privileges.
| Time parked | Current rate | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 0–1 hour | $3 | Brief pickup or short meeting. |
| 1–2 hours | $5 | Short session or appointment. |
| 2–4 hours | $7 | Half-day visit. |
| 4–8 hours | $10 | Many full convention days. |
| 8–24 hours | $12 | Extended event day or downtown stay. |
| Garage | Official location | PDF capacity | Best planning clue |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cowger Garage | 329 W Market St / 4th & Market | 723 spaces | Useful for Market Street and 4th & Market approach. |
| Commonwealth Garage | Jefferson between 3rd & 4th; live homepage lists 313 S 4th St | 636 spaces | Connected to Hyatt Regency; useful from Jefferson Street side. |
Why Commonwealth Garage has two official address references: KICC’s live homepage lists 313 S. 4th St, while the Event Planning Guide lists 320 W. Jefferson St. Both point to the same garage block. Use KICC’s live GPS/parking map rather than treating one street-facing address as the only entrance.
Lost ticket: KICC says a lost parking ticket results in a flat charge per day. Monthly-parking questions go to the parking office at 502-595-3550.
Which KICC entrance should you use?
KICC has four public show-day entrances. There is no single “best door” for every event because your hall, ballroom, registration desk and garage can sit on different sides or levels.
| Access point | When it is useful | Check before walking there |
|---|---|---|
| 4th & Market | Cowger/Market Street side | Whether your event has opened this door and where registration is located. |
| 4th & Jefferson | Fourth Street / central approach | Your concourse and room code. |
| 3rd & Jefferson | Commonwealth Garage / Jefferson side | Whether this door best serves your event area. |
| 3rd & Market | Market/Third Street side; administrative access on non-show days | Show-day door schedule versus call-box use on non-show days. |
| Marriott + Hyatt pedways | Hotel-connected arrivals | Open only at event discretion; do not assume 24/7 access. |
Meetup tip: “meet at the convention center entrance” is too vague. Use a street corner + concourse + room/hall, or a named hotel pedway/registration point.
KICC map, one-way streets and parking approach
Use Kentucky International Convention Center, 221 S. 4th St, Louisville, KY 40202 for general location. Before the final blocks, remember that KICC’s live directions page identifies Jefferson Street as one-way west and Market Street as one-way east.
Louisville airport to KICC
KICC’s current FAQ lists Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport at 7.6 miles from the convention center and identifies taxi and rideshare as available airport-to-venue transportation options.
Rideshare
Useful for a direct downtown arrival. If staying overnight, compare going to your hotel first versus carrying luggage into the venue.
Taxi
Also listed by KICC. Confirm current airport pickup location and fare rather than relying on an old flat-rate blog.
Rental car
Useful for trips beyond downtown, but add garage costs and downtown one-way streets to your plan.
Upper, Main and Lower Concourses: how to read your KICC room code
The Event Planning Guide is written for planners, but its floor plans solve one of the biggest attendee problems: room names tell you which vertical zone of the building you need.
Exhibit Halls A–E, North/South Overlook Suites, upper pre-function areas and the Louisville Marriott Downtown pedway.
Ballrooms A–E, Conference Theater M112, M100-series meeting rooms, boardrooms, tasting kitchen and major pre-function circulation.
L001–L030 meeting-room cluster. These L-series rooms are not the exhibit-hall level even when your event also uses an Upper hall.
Room-code decoder
| Your agenda says | Meaning | Planning implication |
|---|---|---|
| Hall A–E | Upper Concourse exhibit hall | Choose attendee entrance/parking around Upper-concourse route; freight uses dock rules. |
| Ballroom A–E | Main Concourse ballroom section | Do not follow an exhibit-hall route just because your event also has booths. |
| M112 | Main Concourse Conference Theater | Current live page shows 160 fixed tiered seats and built-in AV. |
| M100-series | Main Concourse meeting rooms | Use Main-concourse circulation. |
| L001–L030 | Lower Concourse meeting rooms | Plan elevator/escalator time from street/garage level. |
Exhibit halls, ballroom and Conference Theater: which number should you trust?
Different official pages use slightly different measurement categories and some older capacity text. This guide does not merge them silently.
| Space | Current useful figure | What the difference means |
|---|---|---|
| Continuous Class A exhibit space | 200,125 sq ft on Kentucky government profile | Broad official facility marketing figure. |
| All Exhibit Halls usable area | 204,169 sq ft in current Event Planning Guide capacity table | PDF room-by-room usable total; do not treat the two figures as an error without checking measurement definition. |
| All Exhibit Halls theater | 19,525 | Maximum reference setup; production/staging can reduce it. |
| Hall B | 66,063 sq ft; 6,330 theater; 342 10×10 booths | Current PDF capacity; live hall page also notes at least three dedicated truck bays and South Overlook Suite with rental. |
| Hall D | 80,136 sq ft; 7,826 theater; 406 10×10 booths | Largest single hall in the PDF chart. |
| Entire Ballroom | 39,690 sq ft in PDF; roughly 40,000 in broader official descriptions; 4,900 theater | Five divisible sections; current live page says AV is not included in rental. |
| Conference Theater M112 | 160 fixed/tiered seats on current KICC room page | Older Kentucky government profile still says 175. Use the current live room page for operational planning. |
Conference Theater technology that can matter
The current KICC Theater Room page lists a 220-inch video wall, eight wireless lapel/handheld microphones, two confidence monitors and wireless multi-presenter screen sharing. Built-in AV is included with the room but the page notes an activation/service charge, and the fixed room setup cannot be altered.
Capacity rule: KICC’s planning guide says published capacities are maximum occupancy figures and do not include space required for staging, AV or other production. Your approved event floor plan—not a generic website number—controls the real setup.
ADA parking, elevators, seating, restrooms and service animals
The planning PDF provides enough detail to plan an accessible route before you arrive.
| Need | Official detail | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Accessible parking | 28 ADA-compliant spaces across Cowger and Commonwealth garages | Arrive early and choose the garage closest to the concourse your event uses. |
| Vertical movement | 6 public elevators + 12 public escalators | Use elevator routing for wheelchairs, mobility devices or when escalators are unsuitable. |
| Restrooms | All public restrooms ADA accessible; gender-neutral restrooms available | Ask event staff for the closest facility to your room/hall. |
| Seating | Temporary KICC seating can be arranged for accommodation with advance notice | Request seating needs through event management before event day. |
| Service animals | ADA-defined service dogs permitted; control/harness rules apply | Other animals need advance approval and, for shows, required permits. |
| Wheelchairs / scooters / listening devices / lifts | Special assistance may require advance coordination; event contractors do not always provide rentals | Contact the event and KICC/Event Manager before arrival rather than solving it at the door. |
Responsibility split: KICC says it handles access to permanent facility constructs, while the event licensee handles accessibility of temporary event constructs such as stages, booth layouts or temporary seating.
Is KICC Wi-Fi free? Public-area access vs event-space service
The short KICC FAQ only says Wi-Fi pricing varies by event. The detailed Event Planning Guide is more useful: basic Wi-Fi in public areas is complimentary, while charges apply in licensed spaces.
Attendee in lobby/public areas
Basic public-area Wi-Fi is complimentary according to the planning guide.
Exhibitor or private event space
Do not assume free lobby Wi-Fi covers a booth, POS device, demo, production or licensed meeting room.
Planner / production
Kentucky Venues provides infrastructure options including dedicated/shared connections from 3Mb to 1GB, high-density wireless, SSIDs, VLANs, fiber and onsite technical support.
AV provider: KICC identifies Prestige AV as its preferred in-house audio-visual provider. For Conference Theater M112, use the current room page because some AV is built into the room and the setup is fixed.
Cashless payment, concessions, outside food and luggage check
KICC’s planning guide states the venue is cashless and identifies Levy as the exclusive food-and-beverage provider. Concession availability still depends on the event schedule.
| Question | Current rule | User-help takeaway |
|---|---|---|
| Can I pay cash? | KICC is cashless | Bring a working card/mobile-payment method; onsite ATMs do not change the cashless rule. |
| Can I bring outside food/drink? | Not without prior written approval from the General Manager | For medical/dietary needs, contact the organizer before arrival rather than testing the rule at security. |
| Who handles catering? | Levy is exclusive F&B provider | Planner/exhibitor booth catering should use the official catering route. |
| Is coat check permanent? | KICC can staff a coat-check room for events | Availability/location/rate are event-arranged, not guaranteed every day. |
| Can luggage be stored? | Coat/luggage-check service may be arranged for an event | Do not arrive with large luggage assuming there is a permanent public bag-storage desk. |
Exhibitor docks, freight elevators, shipping and vehicle rules
Attendee doors and exhibitor logistics are deliberately different. The planning guide prohibits freight items, large carts and dollies from normal lobby-door routes and requires approved dock processes.
| Need | Official route / rule | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Upper Exhibit Halls + East M rooms | 2nd Street Loading Dock | Live maps page directs load/unload here. |
| Lower Concourse rooms + Ballrooms + Levy delivery | 3rd Street Loading Dock | Use this side for those assigned spaces. |
| Dock staffing | 2 Dock Masters at Third Street; 3 at Second Street | Required during move-in/out; staff arrive before and remain after loading windows. |
| Freight elevators | FE1/FE2 rated 13,000 lb; FE3 rated 17,000 lb in PDF | Freight must not be routed through passenger elevators. |
| Advance freight | KICC will not accept it before contracted move-in | Use show contractor/advance warehouse when instructed. |
| After move-in begins | Shipments addressed to show contractor | Keep event/show name, booth and contractor details on labels. |
| COD | Not accepted | Prepay carrier/handling arrangements. |
| Vehicles in exhibit hall | Loading/unloading needs KICC authorization | All equipment/freight normally moves via loading dock. |
21-day exhibitor deadline
KICC’s checklist says exhibitor services should be ordered 21 days before the first show day to receive the advance rate. Do not wait until move-in to order electrical or other booth services.
Parcel vs show freight: a box sent for a meeting and a trade-show pallet are not the same workflow. Use the event’s official exhibitor manual whenever it supplies an advance warehouse, decorator label or dock appointment.
Planner timeline: the deadlines that can cost money when missed
Identify service providers, start AV/internet/telecom and catering, submit first event specs/floor-plan requirements, obtain utility forms and schedule a site tour.
Revise floor plans, finalize food planning, provide exhibitor contacts and submit multilevel-display requests at least 90 days ahead when applicable.
Submit preliminary floor plans for compliance review and determine security/guest-services staffing; fire/code diagrams can have 60-day requirements.
Rigging plots/loading requirements and weight-load information can be due; submit insurance early because the policy section uses a 30-day requirement.
Floor-plan changes and exhibitor service ordering hit important deadlines; advance service pricing depends on ordering on time.
Lock approved plans, staffing, AV/internet and guarantees. On-the-fly changes can require Fire Marshal approval and additional fees.
Insurance conflict inside the same PDF: the checklist says the certificate must be received no later than 15 days before move-in, but the formal insurance policy says certificates are due on or before the 30th day prior to the License Term and access can be denied without one. Submit early and follow your signed contract/Event Manager rather than choosing the later deadline.
Current Venue Services staffing rates
KICC’s live Venue Services page says rates changed effective July 1 and uses a four-hour minimum. Ordering fewer than 14 days out is materially more expensive.
| Staff type | Advance | <14 days | Important condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Event Staff | $27.25/hr | $38/hr | Coat check, ticket takers, ushers, badge checkers, booth attendants. |
| Registration Staff | $27.25/hr | $38/hr | Concierge, data entry, room monitors, VIP hosting. |
| Event Team Leader | $32/hr | $45/hr | Required for 4+ hired staff. |
| Event Supervisor | $40/hr | $56.50/hr | Required for 30+ hired staff. |
| External Security | $35/hr | $45.25/hr | Guards, overnight, booth security, dock management. |
Current service-rate note: KICC lists a $100 administrative fee per instance for time/quantity changes once a staffing order has entered scheduling. Rates are subject to change, so use the live Venue Services page for a future event.
KICC contact directory by problem
Calling the main switchboard for every issue creates unnecessary handoffs. Use the specialist route when KICC publishes one.
| Need | Contact | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| General inquiries | 502-595-4381 communications@kyvenues.com | General venue questions and routing. |
| Parking office | 502-595-3550 | Monthly parking and garage questions. |
| Public safety / Lost & Found | 502-595-4362 | Lost items and venue safety contact referenced in planning guide. |
| Audio / visual | 502-612-3445 louisville@prestigeav.com | Current KICC contact page AV route. |
| Catering | 502-630-4397 kiccsalesteam@levyrestaurants.com | Current KICC contact page food/beverage route. |

| Event sales | 502-595-3525 sales@kyvenues.com | Book/plan an event. |
Security, first aid, tobacco, decor, vehicles and Lost & Found
| Topic | Official detail | Why visitors/planners care |
|---|---|---|
| Security | 24-hour perimeter, garage, pedway and internal patrols | Event-specific security staffing can be additional. |
| First aid | High-occupancy events over 1,500 trigger minimum First Aid Team requirements under policy | Ask event staff/security for the active first-aid location. |
| Tobacco / vaping | Indoor facilities tobacco-free, including e-cigarettes/vaping | Outdoor smoking must follow venue distance rules from entrances. |
| Glitter | Not permitted | Important for booths, celebrations and décor. |
| Helium balloons | Not allowed | Do not use them for booth/event décor. |
| Confetti / rice | Requires prior approval | Cleanup fees or rejection can result. |
| Large carts / dollies | Not through lobby doors; freight routes apply | Speakers/exhibitors should use service routing. |
| Lost items | Delivered to security unless show manager instructs otherwise | Use official Lost & Found instead of relying only on organizer staff. |
Hotels near KICC: pedway vs walkable vs event block
Official Louisville/KICC sources say more than 6,000 hotel rooms are close to KICC. The useful distinction is how you plan to move between the hotel and your event.
Marriott / Hyatt connection
Useful in bad weather, but KICC says pedway doors are opened at event discretion. Do not book solely on the assumption of 24/7 indoor access.
Compare the full trip cost
Check nightly rate, hotel parking, cancellation policy, walking route and whether the event hotel block includes useful terms.
Use the organizer’s hotel block first
A hotel can be physically close but outside the official shuttle/block/meeting plan. Check the event housing page before a nonrefundable booking.
KICC vs Kentucky Exposition Center: choose the right Louisville venue
For broad searches like “convention centers in Louisville,” the most important distinction is not a long directory—it is avoiding the two major state-operated venues being mixed up.
| Venue | Address / area | Best known for | Fast clue |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kentucky International Convention Center (former Commonwealth Convention Center) | 221 S. 4th St • Downtown | Downtown conventions, meetings, trade shows, ballroom events, walkable hotels | Your confirmation says KICC, Fourth Street, Cowger/Commonwealth Garage or downtown Louisville. |
| Kentucky Exposition Center | 937 Phillips Lane • Airport area | Very large expos, fairs, arenas, equipment/agriculture events and extensive campus space | Your confirmation says Phillips Lane, Expo Center, Freedom Hall or airport-area campus. |
Simple check: 221 S. 4th St = KICC downtown. 937 Phillips Lane = Kentucky Exposition Center.
LEED Silver and GBAC STAR
KICC’s current About page still describes the facility as LEED Silver certified and GBAC STAR accredited. The sustainability material also cites low-flow plumbing, LED lighting, occupancy controls, construction-waste diversion and water-filling stations as parts of the venue’s sustainability effort.
These credentials are included in the venue schema because they are currently displayed on KICC’s own website and are explained visibly here. No fake score, expiry date or award level beyond the official wording is added.
Common KICC mistakes and the fastest fix
| Problem | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| GPS sends you to the venue but parking is awkward | You routed to 221 S. 4th instead of a garage | Choose Cowger or Commonwealth before entering downtown. |
| The door is locked even though Maps shows the venue open | Generic business hours were mistaken for event door hours | Use organizer show hours and KICC event door schedule. |
| You parked near the wrong side | Garage chosen before checking room/concourse | Use full room code and floor plan first. |
| Pedway is closed | Hotel connection is event-dependent | Use the street entrance your event has opened. |
| Wi-Fi is not free in your booth/room | Complimentary public Wi-Fi was assumed to cover licensed spaces | Use event/KICC technology service for the required connection. |
| Freight is rejected at lobby | Attendee door used for move-in | Return to show manual and correct 2nd/3rd Street dock workflow. |
| Theater capacity differs across official pages | Older government profile still says 175 | Use current KICC live Theater Room page, which lists 160 fixed/tiered seats. |
| Planner finds 15-day and 30-day insurance deadlines | The same PDF contains conflicting timing | Submit at least 30 days early and follow signed contract/Event Manager. |

This browser-only helper is for navigation decisions. It does not replace your event organizer and is not marked up as software.
